BMWs are known for two things: performance and luxury. Driving them is known to be not only comfortable but fun. If you're looking for a BMW that is fun to drive and still holds the whole family, consider the 2021 BMW X3. This Sports Activity Vehicle can tackle whatever you throw at it.
To give drivers from Huntsville, Florence, and Cullman, AL, a better idea of the X3's performance, Century BMW has put together this performance review. Give it a read to see if the X3 is the right kind of ride for you!
Engine Options
There are a few different engine options for the X3, depending on how much power you're looking for in your SAV. The standard 2.0L BMW TwinPower Turbo I-4 engine doesn't disappoint with 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque.
If you want a little more power in your engine, the X3 has an available M trim called the X3 M40i. These M trims across all BMW SUVs and SAVs offer more powerful performance-driven engines. For the X3, you get a 3.0L BMW M TwinPower Turbo 6-cylinder engine. It puts out 382 horsepower and 368 lb-ft of torque.
The third engine option is a combination of an electric and gas engine. The combined engine is a 2.0L BMW TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder with an integrated electric motor. When working together, the combined horsepower is 288 and the torque comes to 310 lb-ft.
Drivetrain and Performance
Regardless of which engine you choose, they each come with the same standard transmission. The 8-speed Sport Automatic transmission with Sport and Manual shift modes and steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters gives you the option to drive your X3 like an automatic or manual. This means you can control the shifting gears or let your vehicle do the work for you.
These trim and engine options also come with three driving dynamics control modes: Eco Pro, Comfort, and Sport. Eco Pro helps you increase fuel efficiency, while Comfort focuses on smoother drives. Sport gives you a sportier drive.
Fuel Economy
So, the BMW X3 has a sporty drive and can fit the whole family. How's its fuel economy? We're glad you asked. Check out the chart below:
Engine | City MPG1 | Highway MPG1 |
2.0L 4-Cylinder BMW TwinPower Turbo Engine | 25 MPG1 | 29 MPG1 |
3.0L 6-cylinder BMW M TwinPower Turbo engine | 21 MPG1 | 27 MPG1 |
2.0L BMW TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder with electric motor | Not Yet Released | Not Yet Released |
Both engines do well when it comes to fuel economy. The 2.0L 4-cylinder BMW TwinPower Turbo engine gets an EPA-estimated 25 city/29 highway MPG.1Â The 3.0L 6-cylinder BMW M TwinPower Turbo engine has slightly less fuel efficiency, but it is still impressive for the power with its EPA-estimated 21 city/27 highway MPG.1
Right now, the 2.0L BMW TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder with electric motor has not yet released the miles per gallon electric (MPGe) information. You should get a total range of roughly 340 miles and can even drive 17 miles on just electric power.1
